Calling All Young Writers
Written by Emily Cockbaine on August 10, 2020
St Bees Community Radio are hosting our first ever Brilliant Bees Writing Competition!
Do you dream of becoming the next Beatrix Potter or Roald Dahl? Or do you just like writing for fun? Either way, the Brilliant Bees writing competition is the perfect opportunity to show off your talent. Your writing may even be recognised elsewhere, as every entry we receive is guaranteed to be published when the competition is over right here on our website!
What are we looking for?
We are looking for creative short stories (between 500 and 1000 words) and poetry (any length) in order to encourage young people to keep reading and writing. We also provide a platform for local talent which has been one of our goals from the beginning – and we have broadcast this talent to almost 200,000 listeners!
Your short story or poem can be about anything you like. Perhaps you would like to write about the lockdown, your family, your pets, emotions, aliens, animals, or anything at all! Just make sure it’s your own.
Who can enter?
To enter the competition you must be age 7 to 12 and live in the West Cumbria area.
How do I enter?
Once you have finished writing your piece – remember to read through and check for mistakes first – send it to email@example.com by 31st August 2020 with your name and age, then from there it’s up to us to read your fantastic writing and decide on the winners!
What are the prizes?
We will choose three winners, and these pieces will be read out on our radio station at stbeesradio.co.uk
Michael Moon’s Book Shop in Whitehaven has very kindly decided to sponsor our competition – they have a huge range of books both new and old, so why not pop in for a look around?
1st place will receive a £10 voucher for Moon’s Book Shop along with a limited edition St Bees Community Radio T-Shirt
2nd place will receive a £5 voucher for Moon’s Book Shop along with a limited edition St Bees Community Radio T-Shirt
3rd place will receive a limited edition St Bees Community Radio tote bag
Tips and Tricks
Now is the time to get writing! But before you start, remember to plan: will you write a short story or a poem? What will it be about? What genre will it be? What will the characters be like?
A quick Google search will provide you with endless ideas, and the following websites offer some helpful advice:
