I’ve always loved live music and going to see bands. For 15 years, I produced a Gig Guide for the local area to encourage other folk to go and see live music too. I once got asked to write gig reviews for a national blues magazine which I did for a few years covering Maryport and Carlisle Blues Festivals. I started to play the saxophone in my 40’s and formed a band, we had some great times playing in local pubs and we once won the Battle of the Bands Competition at Maryport where the prize was an opening gig at the Blues Festival. What I’m playing on St Bees Community Radio is a selection of tracks of different styles and genres, played in different styles and genres from the original, mostly orchestral, jazz, country, pop and reggae versions of rock tracks. Some are brilliant, one or two are dire, but they all appeal to my warped sense of musical taste! The inspiration for all this goes to Dave Morgan after he told me that he hated Country Music, so I made him a CD of some tracks that were country songs done differently. He did admit to liking it!

It was a warm summers evening in the early 2000’s when my mate Simon Brown rolled up to my house in his Atomix Discos van and asked if I fancied going with him to help DJ at an 18th birthday party. I’d never DJ’ed before but it sounded like fun so I thought ‘why not’. […]
